My design style

Recently I’ve been asked several times about what my style is? I need two admin, that during my 14 years of experience, i haven’t been thinking much what my style is.

So what is my style?

I start every interior with two aspects which determine style - the personality of the client and the personality of the space. I interview clients about who they are and what they love, how they live and how they want to feel in a space. You never know what you will discover but it is always something unique. Once, the whole idea and style direction started with golden vinyl record of Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon. It inspired me to create an interior with 70’s vibe style furniture and to use all the colors which are dispersed from room to room.

The personality of the space also determine the style. I believe that the interior is a continuation of the architecture and there are should be connected elements. I barely can imagine a heavy classic interior in modern Eichler house.

The personality of the client and of space are always unique, however designer’s style is something that designer brings into each project, something that you may call personal features. It made me think what features I apply to every project?

My first design feature I would say is a classic way of space planing. No matter when the building was built, I believe that that every space has to have an axis. When you enter a room, what do you see first? So the doorways always create an axis. Same with corridors, working spaces, sitting spots, entrances and, of course, focal points of kitchen and living room.

Although I love traditional planning, I admire whimsical details. I always research interesting shapes which sometimes may look odd but they bring unexpected and pleasurable ambience. My favorite way to add whimsy is to add it with lighting. Lighting fixtures are accessories of the space and they can continue or contrast the overall style and I love to play with it. Another interesting attribute is the play between light and shadow. Some lighting shades can wrap you into space, other can emphasize textures or colors or bring  unpredictable shadows.

In general about my style I would say it is contemporary and timeless. Contemporary, by definition, is what is happening now and I love to bring a sense of nowadays into my design. In contrary, timeless is something that lasts almost forever and you can’t really say which period it belongs. This approach helps me mix traditions with trends into something new and unexpected.
